INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (July 17, 2015) — The Police Explorer Program, a program designed to help our young people figure out if a life devoted to fighting crime is right for them, graduated a new class Friday evening.

The one-week program is modeled after the 15-week course offered at the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy.

“By doing this this week, it is really intense to see if this is the career path they want to be on,” explained Noblesville Officer Matt Johnston.

More than 50 young people got the chance to work side-by-side with police to help them decide if they want to pursue a career in criminal justice.

“I grew up always having an interest in helping other people and being there in their times of need and felt law enforcement was best way to do so,” said Jonathan Mathioudakis.

Mathioudakis is a recent high school graduate. He plans to study criminal justice in college and wants to one day work for the FBI.

“I`ve learned a lot. The basics, firearms instructions, defense tactics, officer tactics, anything about how officers function on a daily basis,” said program graduate Jonathan Mathioudakis.

The hands-on experience was started ten years ago by Johnston.

This is the first year the special criminal justice program was offered statewide.

Young people connected to eight policing agencies across the state, including IMPD, Carmel, Johnson and Fishers participated in this week’s Police Explorer academy.
