INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (July 17, 2015) — Flash flooding took residents and shoppers by surprise on the southwest side, where firefighters stepped in to rescue people trapped by rising waters.
A creek off of Kentucky Avenue spilled over, quickly filling the Marwood Plaza shopping center. Kroger employee Karen Davis said the flooding started inside the store itself.
“We had the ceiling tiles fall in the back of the store and it was pouring and so we closed the store. … Then as soon as we got the store closed the water started pouring in the front doors,” Davis said.
IMPD and several fire departments set up a command post next door, where they learned residents had also become trapped by waters. At one point, several rescue boats were out checking on people.
“Right now it’s all about evacuating those that potentially are either stuck in their homes or are going to be stuck in their homes as the water rises,” Capt. Mike Pruitt said.
In all, five people ended up being bused to a Red Cross shelter on 10th Street. Pruitt said officers knocked on around 40 doors to be sure residents inside were okay.
By 11 p.m., the water was receding and residents were allowed to stay in their homes. The command post remained open into the night in case rain hit the area again and caused more flooding.
